The operation is very simple: first, you turn one wing to retract the bolt. Keep turning until the nut fits into the "cockpit." Then place the nut and turn the wing back. With a few turns, you can crack even the hardest shell. :) The big advantage of the mechanism is that, unlike plier-shaped nutcrackers, you can hardly pinch your hand (unless you put your finger in instead of the nut), and even hard nuts can be cracked with minimal effort.
The TIE Fighter nutcracker is made of solid metal and is pleasantly heavy, weighing about 650 g. This makes it nicely robust, and there are no plastic parts or coatings that could come off during use.
